MOGA

MOGA maintains essential elements of yoga and incorporates various alternative wellness techniques such as SomaVeda.

Although the title "MOGA" is obviously similar to the word "yoga" it is really a whole other animal. MOGA does things differently than a typical western yoga studio. If you don't know what to expect, you might be anywhere from surprised to disappointed.

Some basic things that set MOGA apart:
  • MOGA ditches the mat
    • Great article HERE on some good points for why MOGA (generally) doesnt use mats
      • Benefits of "not sticking"
      • Benefits of informality
      • Benefits of coming unprepared
      • Loss of mat superiority (yes, it exists)
      • More cost effective
    • Classes may involve a nature walk followed by some impromptu MOGA
  • MOGA is practiced outdoors, on grass, when possible
    • Related topics (articles coming soon):
      • Benefits of earthing
      • Benefits of forest bathing
      • Benefits of sungazing/sunbathing
      • Benefits of rainshowers
      • Benefits of natural lighting
  • MOGA is raw and unique
    • MOGA instructors don't have a pre-prepared class flow. Classes are customized on the spot based on who is in attendance. There is an implied element of intuitively led classes. Sure, that means the instructor might not be a commercially typical yogi, but that is what makes it so great!
    • Instructors are authentic as are the classes. If you are looking for a more relaxing or a perfect class, MOGA is probably not a great fit, but who knows, it might not be what you think you want, but just what you need.
  • MOGA is more than yoga
    • Each MOGA class is a melting pot of fitness methods showcasing whatever training the instructors have in their toolbox, which can be anywhere from tai chi, dance, strength training/exercise, martial arts, gymnastics, qi gong, movement, etc.
    • Get to know your instructor to learn their particular style. Most yoga classes don't leave room for individuality, the studio looks for a "type" of teacher and wants all classes to be pretty much the same. Sure, students have preference of teachers, but if they had a substitute, they generally know what to expect. Not so with MOGA!
    • MOGA addresses diet. Initially you will be asked to not eat at least an hour before class. Generally a light refreshment will provided after class to ensure you are grounded before going back to the real word (often you get a floaty euphoric feeling from class and it's not recommended to drive that way).
  • MOGA is "spiritual"
    • If you have ever been to gym yoga, you won't see an emphasis on spirituality. Chanting (ooooohm....), breathwork, healing, and extended meditation are all standard with MOGA.
    • You might come to a MOGA class expecting to stretch for an hour and leave with having done mostly meditation and strength poses. Instructors are intuitively guided to lead what clients need as a whole person, which entails the body, but also mind and spirit.
    • One on one classes are available to optimize what YOU need specifically.
  • MOGA is therapeutic
    • Many think yoga is about stretching and flexibility. It's a lot more about strength than given credit for. But taking it a step further, MOGA instructors are also energy workers and may incorporate intuitive healing or intuitive guidance into classes.
  • MOGA is community
    • Your presence shapes the class, it literally wouldn't be the same without you. Classes are interactive and don't have a sense of teacher performance.
    • The Aeuypo Wellness Center is open daily from 10-2. You don't have to just come to class and leave. Come relax for a bit and check out the love meditation room or zen meditation garden.
    • If you are late to group class just jump on in. Stay as long as you can. No obligations.
Other topics of note (coming soon):
  • Why we don't do "hot yoga"
  • Why we don't use mirrors
  • Why we start with eyes-open standing meditation (not seated)
  • Why we finish with seated medtation (not lying down)
